White water rafting - Kithulgala

If you want a thrilling experience with adrenaline rush, the best thing to do is white water rafting. You do not require any practice or swimming capability to engage in this sport. This is one of the most exciting things you can do in Sri Lanka while enjoying the calm of the nature. There are several places to do rafting but, the best destination for white water rafting is "Kithulgala". The picturesque Kelani River is a unique way to observe the nature which consists of steep mountains and greenery jungles along the river.

"Kithulgala" is located about 80km from Colombo. It is a pleasant town amidst hills, jungles and plantations. Kelani river flows through "Kithulgala" forming foam and gushing sound when flowing against the rock obstacles which turns water into white. Its name has derived from the "Kithul" palm tree groves which are abundant in the area.

There are adventure providing groups in the area who provide service packages for a team at a pre
defined price. Normally, the teams are allowed to do rafting for a 5km distance but may vary based on the package. Life jackets, advice on safety, jungle trekking, rafting, confidence jumping, natural rock pool bath, and additional games are some activities and services included in the packages. This can be enjoyed by anyone above 10 years old and there are different levels you can start depending on whether the group are thrill seekers or are novice who want to start off simply.
